Overview of English
English studies emphasize both traditionally recognized "Great Works"
-- such as Shakespeare's plays and the grand Victorian novels -- and
new areas of study like world literatures, children's literature, and
detective fiction. English explores the power of literary language: for example,
the reasons why some books last for centuries and are read all over the world. We
examine such issues as the meaning of cultural diversity, the significance of social
constructions of gender, the relation between high and popular cultures, and the
connections between literature and other forms of expression, from music to medical
texts. We read to understand literature, but equally, we learn to understand
ourselves better by reading. Both skills are valuable in any culture or market
economy and both help us choose the most productive way to live our lives. Whether
your interests take you into the rapidly expanding world of global culture and
technology, or whether you are drawn toward a closely-knit life in smaller
communities, English studies at Scarborough will increase your cultural understanding
and sensitivity and equip you well for any career that you choose.
