For any health concern, doctors and nurses are available to the students at University of Toronto Scarborough. Appointments are recommended and walk-ins will be accommodated from 9:00am - 11:00am and 2:00pm - 4:00pm.
Some of the services that we provide include:
Several options are available to students with acne. Treatments include medicated ointments/creams/lotions, antibiotics and other oral medications. Some medications require ongoing monitoring.
Students can book an appointment with one of the doctors at the front desk.
Students are required to book an appointment with a doctor at the front desk. Students must bring their serum prescribed by their allergist to the appointment. After the initial consultation, the nurse then administers the injections as ordered by the allergist.
Nurses can only administer an injection when a physician is present.
Students are required to remain in the clinic 20-30 minutes after the injection. This is a safety precaution so that help is available should an adverse reaction occur. Please plan your time to allow for this wait.
A diagnostic test is written by the doctor to gather more information about a student’s health, illness, condition, or concern. A diagnostic test includes blood tests, urine tests, swabs, ultrasounds, CT scans (computed tomography) and X-rays to name a few.
The doctor or nurse usually does blood tests, urine tests and swabs in the Health & Wellness Centre. Other tests are arranged off campus at a hospital or diagnostic clinic.
The waiting time for test results ranges from 1 to 30 days. All students with abnormal test results are notified by telephone or email. We do not usually call students with normal results. Students are welcome to visit the front desk and ask to see a nurse or book an appointment with a doctor to review/discuss their results.
There are times when a student may have an injury or had surgery that requires an extensive bandage (dressing) on their body to be changed regularly. A student can ask to see a nurse at the front desk to arrange this service.
Please bring any instructions from the hospital or surgeon with details of the dressing change.
Students that require immediate attention for an injury can visit the Health & Wellness Centre and ask to see a nurse. A nurse or doctor will provide you with first aid and advise you if you need a follow up visit.
If you are unable to get to the Health & Wellness Centre please contact EMRG and/or University of Toronto Scarborough Community Police at 416-287-7333.
The Health & Wellness Centre offers flu clinics annually in the fall. Flu shots are free of charge. You will need your valid health card and student card to register and you will be required to complete a checklist before your immunization. The nurse will review this with you.
It is necessary to wait 20 minutes after the shot as a safety precaution so that help is available should an adverse reaction occur. Please plan your time accordingly.
Students can book an appointment with a doctor at the front desk to receive an immunization/vaccine. Some vaccines are covered by health insurance and others have a cost. Students are encouraged to discuss their immunization status and history with their doctor during their physical exam. Bring your immunization record with you to your appointment.
Requests from an employer/volunteer placement or other agency also known as a third party may require students to receive an immunization/vaccines or Tuberculin skin tests (TB test). There may be a cost associated with this. Please visit the front desk to see if a doctor’s appointment is necessary.
It is necessary to wait in the office for 20 minutes after receiving any vaccine. This ensures help is available if an adverse reaction occurs.
Students who have been immunized in Toronto and want to check what immunization/vaccines they have received in high school or are seeking general information can call the Immunization Information Hotline at 416-392-1250.
For more information about immunization and vaccines please visit the Public Health Agency of Canada.
If you require immunization for travel we recommend you visit a travel clinic.
Physical exam/check up involves an overall check of your general health.
Students are required to book an appointment with a doctor at the front desk. It is helpful to bring your immunization records and any other documentation regarding any health history that the doctor or nurses should be aware of. Please arrive 15 minutes ahead of your appointment so the nurse can start the interview process.
In some cases, the doctor may feel it is necessary to send a student for a diagnostic test off campus to further investigate any health concerns.
Generally, women should have a physical exam/check up every 12-18 months. Once a woman becomes sexually active it is recommended that she have an annual Pap test.
A man should have a physical examination every 1-3 years, based on the individual’s health history. For men aged 20-35, testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer. It is important for men to check their testicles regularly by conducting their own testicular examination. This exam can also be conducted by a doctor during your physical exam.

Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) – also called the Morning After Pill (MAP)
The Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) can prevent a pregnancy when used soon after a single act of unprotected intercourse or following failure of birth control (e.g. the condom breaks, missed pills).
ECP can be taken up to 72 hours (the sooner the better) following intercourse. It is important to note that this is not 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and offers NO protection against sexually transmitted diseases.
Students can ask to see a nurse at the front desk for this service. If the Health & Wellness Centre is closed please visit your nearest pharmacy and request the Emergency Contraceptive Pill.
The Pap (Papanicolaou) test is a screening test of the cells of the cervix (opening of the uterus). The results can detect changes in the cells ranging from infection and inflammation to precancerous changes. Most of these changes are caused by the Human Papillomavirus.
Once a woman becomes sexually active it is recommended that they have an annual Pap test for the rest of their life.
Students can book a Pap test with a physical exam (full body check) if they have not had one in over a year. Please book an appointment with a doctor at the front desk.
